Not a lot of artists can say they’ve been commissioned to paint over 200 movie posters. John Solie’s artwork covers a wide range of genres from comedy, action, Blaxploitation, and porn. But he’s no one-trick pony, Solie has also been commissioned to illustrate for The Saturday Evening Post, TV Guide, and NASA.
Born in LaCrosse, Wisconsin. John became the go-to-artist from Hollywood studios and magazines because of his ability to capture the essence of his subjects and get a dead-on-balls-accurate likeness.
Here’s the movie poster for Winter Kills (1979) which looks bonkers. Below that is a very long trailer that seems to give spoiler after spoiler.
Solie is currently a member of the NASA art team with paintings hanging at the Kennedy Space Center and Johnson Space Center. He lives in Arizona and mostly paints western art now.
His art is a pretty solid representation of what American Pulps is all about. Because, like us, it’s all over the place. Weird sci-fi movies, saucy seventies flicks, oddball comedies, and some of our favorite Blaxploitation posters are below. Enjoy:
