OK, so June’s been pretty balls-to-the-wall work-wise at the Pulps; so I’m giving you the June reading list in July. Because I’m a completist and I can’t skip a month even though I theoretically already have. The July reading list will come out soon, not in August, don’t worry.
So here goes, the American Pulps June Reading list in July.
Suburban Dicks — Fabian Nicieza
From the guy who brought you Deadpool, comes Suburban Dicks, a funny story about amateur sleuths in Central Jersey, one of whom is pregnant when she discovers a dead body at a gas station. This book has bumbling cops, conspiracy, racial tensions, and body parts, it’s a fun ride.
Pulp Empire — Paul S. Hirsch
Super interesting subject matter about the world of Pulp Comics during the 40s and 50s, and “how the US government both attacked and appropriated comic books to help wage World War II and the Cold War, promote official–and clandestine–foreign policy, and deflect global critiques of American racism.” I don’t think they’re talking about The Watchmen.
A Handful of Hell: Classic War and Adventure Stories — Robert F. Dorr, Robert Deis and Wyatt Doyle
We’ve had the Men’s Adventure Library on every single one of our monthly reading lists and we won’t stop until we’ve gone through the whole catalogue. A Handful of Hell features the work of the late Robert F. Dorr, who wrote many great stories for the Men’s Adventure Magazines we love. Dorr is an interesting guy himself, he was a pilot and veteran of the Korean War. When he left the service he worked in the US Department of State as a US Diplomat.
Smalltime: A Story of My Family and the Mob — Russell Shorto
We like to throw non-fiction in the mix every month, this month it’s Russell Shorto’s family memoir about his grandfather, a small town mob boss. It also follows his great grandfather, who came over from Sicily to a mining town in Pennsylvania, settling down where Shorto’s grandfather would eventually run a gambling empire, and the town.
You can find all of these books in our online bookshop, where we have other collections like Hardboiled Crime novels we love.
